About XCL

Original identity. Ongoing development. One XCL.

Welcome to Project Excelsior

Project Excelsior (XCL) is an independent blockchain project. This website, ProjectXcel.com, is its primary official public website and the starting point for development news, wallet information, and project resources.

The project continues through changes to its software, maintenance of its blockchain implementation, and new tools to help people connect with the network. The official source repositories provide visibility into this ongoing work.

From the testnets to XCL today

The labels V1 and V2 have a real place in the history of Project Excelsior. They referred to successive testnet iterations—not separate XCL coins, competing projects, or distinct official blockchain identities. Testing surfaced issues, informed changes, and helped guide the next iteration.

November 23, 2021 / Testnet V1

V1 — First testnet

The original XCL testnet launched. Testing identified problems with block reward halving and a mismatch between the intended coin supply and the block timing. The code was also based on an older Litecoin (LTC) version that raised security concerns and required modernization.

October 28, 2022 / Testnet V2

V2 — Second testnet

The next XCL testnet iteration followed the issues found in V1. V2 testing exposed additional challenges, including orphaned blocks and problems involving smaller blocks. This was continued testing of the same Project Excelsior, not a second official XCL currency.

April 8, 2025 / XCL Launch

Project Excelsior (XCL) launches

Following the testnet development period, XCL launched on April 8, 2025. The earlier V1 and V2 labels refer to historical test environments, while XCL is the name of the project and its launched blockchain currency.

Today / Continued development

One Project. One Blockchain. One XCL.

Development continues through the core blockchain, official project resources, and wallet tools. There are no separate official projects or currencies called XCL V1 and XCL V2.

One blockchain identity

XCL is the name of the project and its blockchain currency. V1 and V2 were historical testnet iteration labels. They do not indicate separately recognized official projects or currencies named XCL V1 or XCL V2.
